Greetings Terrans & happy (slightly belated) Samhain. What an auspicious time to launch a new project to complete the latest Warhammer Quest boxed game – the Cursed City!! (cue spooky backround noises). For those not in the know, WQ:CC was released back in April, and it takes a party of adventurers to the titular Cursed City of Ulfenkarn, which is being ravaged by a big-bad vampire called ‘Radukar the Wolf’. The game is basically a dungeon-crawl where you need to compete missions & fight hordes of undead in order to reach & kill Radukar, and hopefully lift the curse on Ulfenkarn!
This release caused a bit of a stir in ‘the community’ – the minis are very nice indeed & the game format is now well established & very successful, but the game controversially sold out in just 2 hours… The webstore buckled under the pressure & I actually didn’t even know that I had managed to bag a copy until it turned up at my house, so yeah, frustrating release. To make matters worse, GW have implied that the game is not going to be re-released or expanded upon… ever… (cue much gnashing of fanboy teeth & the salivation of a hundred ebay scalpers!). Whether this really will be a one-off release or not I don’t know, but it makes no odds to me – I’m painting my set & you guys are along for the ride, so let’s get into it!
The box contains all the bits needed to play the game, including 60 brand new miniatures, (8 Heroes; 5 ‘Overlords’ (evil boss monsters); 37 generic baddies; 10 object markers). All the components are really high quality, and the minis look pretty darn fine. I’ll follow the same forma as I did with the Conan set – weekly(ish) posts with a few minis and a bit of a write-up. Sound good? Ok, here we go!
.
First up, and because Halloween, I wanted to tackle the big fella himself – Radukar the Wolf:

.

According to the fluff, Radukar was an ambitious warlord who wanted to become a vampire – as you do. He raided some vamp’s tomb, killed a two-headed wolf, nicked a barrow-blade from inside & this blade turned him into a vampire… He then liberated a city called Mournhold from Chaos, and became the ruler of the city – apparently, he was doing a decent job of it, but then an in-world event called the ‘Necroquake’ happened… Unfortunately for the citizens of Mournhold, the Necroquake amped up Radukar’s powers & made him lose his shit, so now the city is his hunting ground & has become known as Ulfenkarn… I find all this fluff quite tedious tbh, but the key points are Vampire, Ruler, Batshit Crazy.
Radukar is an interesting model to paint – he’s technically a very good mini, but the face gets lost in all that fur from his two-headed wolf pelt & furry hat… As such, the model lacks a clear focal point in my opinion, (though I found that giving him an orange beard helped to frame the face a little). Still, it is what it is, and I painted him up as best I could with Contrast paints & washes, drybrushing where I could get away with it, (and blending and highlighting where I couldn’t). I experimented with very faint crosshatch lines on the trousers & belt to show wear, and I also used a fair amount of corrosion where I felt it appropriate. I really used Radukar to set the tone for the whole box, and I want things to look worn and tired… The suggestion is that the curse over the city affects everything, even metals leather and cloth.
.
Next, I went for a big boi – the ‘Vargskyr Vampire’:

.
Vargskyr are bestial manifestations of the ‘Vyrkos’ strain of the Soulblight curse… I have no idea what any of that means, but I think that they are basically vampires that have been overcome by bloodlust and have devolved into bestial wolf-like creatures… Whatever it is, it’s a big mini – easily the biggest and most imposing mini in the set. It went together ok – a few minor issues with gapping here and there but nothing terrible, and painting was great fun. I really went for it with the wet blending on all the skin, pushing the highlighting & getting a very pale complexion, and then really working to get some texture in there. The fur was just really simple drybrushing, so nothing fancy… This beasty didn’t take long at all & was very satisfying to complete.
Well, that’s it for this week – I hope you enjoyed the post & the minis! Rest assured, there is more to follow next week 😊
The previous format worked well Alex so I agree, little point in changing, and from the look of it you are off to a very good start. Two excellent figures to focus on and very nicely painted too. You’ve set the bar nice and high and I shall look forward to seeing more wonderful minis in the weeks ahead. 🙂
Cheers mate, I do want to keep the painting standard high on this project, especially on the characters. Even more important – I want a really coherent theme throughout… the set deserves the effort – there are a few iffy minis, but most are solid & there are some absolute gems too. All in all, an exciting project!
Great work on both Alex, loads of character in the painting.
As for GW and their marketing strategy . . . . . . don’t even go there ! LOL
Cheers mate, glad you like ‘em 😊
Love it!
The vargskyr is one of my fave figs in the set, I have that and a handful of other figs from CC assembled and sprayed, but I’m primarily staying focused on pirate themed things for now anyway..
The rat swarms and bats in this set are great, so I think that I will tackle them as I can justify them as encounters I’m pirate things. The rest of CC will be Q3 2022 at the very earliest I reckon though, so this project is distracting :)
Love it all the same. The vargskyr looks dirty, and scary, just like it should.
Cheers mate, glad you likey! I’m having fun with this one 😊
Excellent work on these horrors, Alex! Both these minis are great, but the Vargskyr Vampire really stands out as a terrific sculpt and you’ve done it total justice with your painting, really bringing the mini to life. I’m really looking forward to seeing you paint up the rest of the figures.
As for GW’s sales technique, I honestly do not understand where they’re coming from. Why they insist on this “limited edition” strategy is beyond me, especially when their website can’t cope with the demand. And on top of that, probably 60% of the boxes they sold will probably end up as wildly overpriced bits on Ebay, so all they’ve really accomplished is aiding scalpers.
Cheers mate, I’m pretty pleased with flesh on the Vargskyr 😉
As for GW, I’ve given up on trying to fathom it out… I bet they’ll re-release it at some point, it’s not like they’ve lost the digital files or anything!!
Both of those are looking great, I especially like how you’ve done the Vargskyr. I was tempted to bottle out of making mine pale and go for a darker looking creature instead, but now I see yours I think I’ll have to be a brave boy and make mine pale too, it just looks so damn good that way. I’d like to start tackling my set soon-ish so seeing you powering through should give me a bit of encouragement. :-)
I reckon he’d look good dark too mate – go for it!! 😁👍
I’m looking to get my set done comfortably by Christmas, though I may be slowing down soon due to starting my OU Masters next week! Yikes! 🥺
At one point I had a plan to get mine done by Christmas but as usual I’ve bitten off far more than I can chew. Hopefully you’ve got more sense though – I reckon you’ll manage no bother. Good luck with the Masters, what’re you studying?
Cheers mate – it’s Business Administration… boring stuff so I can be all Lord Business and shit. Work are paying so they call the shots 😂
Cracking work on these two! I have been watching resale sites to find a few loose Cursed City figures … I’ve got to think that some folks have decided they need to move CC off their pile of shame, right? Their loss is my gain?
Cheers mate! They are great minis, and I’m certainly not above paying scalper prices in extremis… leaves a nasty taste though doesn’t it? 😤
Very nice indeed! I tend to agree that vampire’s face is a bit lost amongst his furry clothes but you’ve done a great job making it more visible with his ginger beard. I am very much a fan of the other, more monstrous vampire: the skin is very creepy looking and it just looks somehow exactly like it should.
Cheers dude, yeah, furry-chops was a bit of a challenge, but the big fella was just lush to paint… I just love painting skin!!
Very nice! :-) I’ll enjoy following your progress I think – the Conan journey was great!
Aw, cheers mate! This one won’t be quite as epic, but still fun I hope 😊
Wow, they both are monstrous and menacing, you did a pretty outstanding job on them!
Cheers dude 🤘😁
Oh, and your Gargant is in-fucking-sane by the way!!! Loving it mate ❤️❤️❤️
I really enjoy watching you display the Conan figures, and I know I’ll enjoy this lot too. I paid some attention to initial Cursed City promotion. It wouldn’t have been something I’d have bought, but I really liked the look of the figures they were showing. I’m looking forward to seeing the rest. Really great work so far!
Cheers mate, glad you enjoyed Conan & hope the same is true here 🤞
There are some lovely minis in with this lot so it should be fun 😊
Ahhh lucky you for snagging the boxed set mate. Some great models. I love Radukar. Nice choice of colours.
Cheers dude – it was certainly a surprise when it turned up! No confirmation of any sort… 🤨
Lovely work on both figures mate, and a cracking pair of figures they are too. I totally agree with your opinion of the GW blurb, but some people threat it like their bible!! and know it all inside out! I’d say they need to get a life but hey’ I make He-man figures so what do I know!
It would be cool if for once they just put “Vampire Ruler Batcrap Crazy” as the background story though!😁
Cheers Roger.
Cheers mate, tbf I used to like the fluff back in the good old days, but I do find it all a bit silly now… don’t know if that’s me changing or them!! 😂
Nice work mate, I do like the vampire !!
cheers dude 😊
Great work! Particularly like the more obviously monstrous vamp. The lighter colors help lean it more to “wolf” than “bat”.
I agree with you that the face is a bit lost in the furs, but short of a conversion, I think you have done the best that is possible.
Cheers mate, I agree – he’s more werewolf than vampire really, but still a fab model. Radukar is less good objectively I suppose, but still nice to paint 😊
These are great, I also managed to get this box and worked a little on the skeletons, not been brave enough to look at the bosses yet so thanks for putting some great inspiration out there!
I must say you are getting a lot of depth with your contrast/dry brush method must really be working for you!
Cheers mate – yeah, go for it & dig in!! I’m really enjoying my painting at the moment, playing with thin coats & using paint to add texture where possible… Contrasts are great for this style I find 😊
