Greetings Terrans, how goes it? I’m back after another BOYL weekend – great to catch up with some awesome hobby people, meet new ones, and generally soak up another full-on OldHammer extravaganza! I was pretty much winging it this weekend with nothing specific planned, and that kinda backfired on Saturday when the rain forced everyone into cover & drastically reduced the number of tables available. Still, I managed to get involved with a SpaceHulk campaign, played some Frostgrave, tried out a new game called ‘The Doomed’, and generally caught up with folks. A particular highlight this year was having a short chat with Trish Carden – superb sculptor and a lovely lady to boot. Probably most importantly, this was the last BOYL at the current Foundry location, so I really wanted to be there to mark the close of that chapter. I’ll miss the old place, and I wonder if the new one will have the same kind of atmosphere, but I’m looking forward to finding out next year.
Anyway, the best cure for the post-BOYL blues is to get on and paint something, and as you can probably guess from the title, it’s back to the BS Fortress for another adventurer – this time it’s the shouty bashy priesty guy called ‘Taddeus the Purifier’:

The name ‘Taddeus’ always makes me think ‘Tedious’, and honestly, I expected the painting experience to be just that because he’s a detailed mini with a lot going on. However, he’s actually quite a nice thing to paint once you get going, and I did enjoy the process. The colour scheme might seem a bit busy, but green & red are opposite on the colour wheel, and so is purple and yellow, so it works in theory… I’m pretty happy that it works in practice too.
Anyway, that’s all I have for you this week – short but sweet. I’m going to be pushing to clear all the other BS Fortress characters over the next couple of weeks, so expect to see a few more in the near future.
Ah, good old Taddeus, I have the same feeling about painting him – he looks lovely finished but somehow my will to actually paint him keeps evaporating. Glad to hear you enjoyed him once you got going, I probably just need to roll up my sleeves and get on with it.
Glad to hear you enjoyed BOYL; Trish Carden eh – a real legend. Must confess I find her sculpts a bit hit and miss (don’t tell her that now you’re on chatting terms and all!) but when she’s good she’s one of the best.
Yeah, I needed a bit of a run-up but he was worth it 😊
I know what you mean about Trish – not everything is amazing, but she’s done some real beauties, including some modern gems! Her new Hydra is gorgeous…
Thaddeus is a busy and strange sculpt. His face is what bothers me the most – it’s a obese man’s face on a portly man’s body – just seems too….. fat? I am tempted to also hack off the bishop’s hat as I just don’t see it staying on for long once he starts whirling that power mace around his personage.
I like the scheme you’ve gone with, though the purple… to me it seems a bit out of place. But that’s my opinion and we all know opinions are like….. you know the saying. :)
Cheers mate, I agree, the proportions are a bit off & adding a 4th primary is always a risk – not everyone’s cup of tea 😊
It would be fun to try a headswap perhaps, but it’s a case of CBFA for me on this guy – let’s face it, I wouldn’t be painting him at all if he wasn’t part of this set 😂
Glad you had a good time at BOYL, I really must go one year, and catch up with people, as I saw Tony Yates was there again.
great work on the priest, the colours work well all together, but not a massive fan of the sculpt, but that’s the same for all the priests GW have done ! LOL
Cheers mate, yeah you should! it would be awesome to meet properly – assuming you’re not an arse of course 😂
I’m with you on the sculpt being pretty meh, and yeah, now you mention it, I can’t think of a good modern 40k priest either! 😬
Haha “shouty bashy priesty guy” haha. Great work Alex.
Cheers mate – I reckon he’s a real dick to hang out with 😂
This sculpt is my least favourite of the whole batch of heroes (I think it’s mostly the face and the mitre), but I have to say you did something really interesting with that palette. Well done!
Cheers Suber, yup, he’s the weakest of the set I reckon… turd successfully polished 😊
Lovely! I really like this sculpt as it’s right out of a John Blanche drawing. Your colours on it are so lovely and rich, they really bring him to life.
Cheers mate, there is just something pleasing about green & bone – just works well I guess! 😊
