Greetings Terrans, I hope you are well. A few weeks ago I shared my test model for a new army project – scratching a 35-year old itch to build and paint the OldHammer Eldar army of my teenage dreams. Well, finishing my Tzeentch warband gave me the perfect opportunity to kick that project off in earnest & get some more minis painted. However, before I share the photos, I want to set out a few ‘ground rules’ for the project:

1: I’m going with a Homebrew Craftworld rather than one of the established ones – I’ve settled on a purple/yellow colour scheme for Guardians from my (still) unnamed craft world. I’ll use purple as the main colour, and yellow on helmets and key armour pads, but I also had the idea of some Guardians being ex-Aspect Warriors & maybe carrying colours over from their former shrines, (just as a bit of fun & to add some variety).

2: Initially, I will focus on the minis I have stored in my lead pile – no new purchases until they are painted!

3: This includes my ASPECT WARRIORS!!! Including a homebrew shrine of Predator-esque warriors suitable for a possible ‘Tyrannid-Pyramid’ game next summer.

4: Once the lead pile is processed, I will add minis and attempt to round out collections – e.g. RT04/RT401 Space Elves, RT402 Space Elf Command, the RTB6 Harlequins, and so on. Looking forward to this!

5: Other ‘Elves in Space’ to be added as the fancy takes me – e.g. OG Dark Eldar, Ghost Warriors, Harlequins, and so on. Basically a mix and match approach to building out an eclectic combined Eldar force.

6: Old lead minis only, (obvs), but maybe some plastic vehicles as well – the current Wave Serpent/Falcon kit is pretty much unchanged since 1997 and would fit in nicely for example.

So that’s the loose framework for the project – now to some minis!

Firstly, just a re-show of the Craftworld Autarch – I’ve already shared this mini, but I reworked some of the details so I thought it worth reposting. I used Teal as the spot colour, and combined with the wings, this strongly ties this Autarch back to the Swooping hawk shrine, (but also hints of Dire Avenger and Howling Banshee in there with the weapon choice as well):

Next up, a flag waverer – a neat little conversion if I do say so myself. I’ve also used a dark blue spot colour here to suggest this Guardian is a former Dire Avenger:

Next we have a musician – Kelos Longfinger. This is actually a strip & repaint of a mini I first painted back in 2015(!!). I’ve used bone and white to tie this Guardian back to the Howling Banshee shrine – which also ties in with the idea of using sonics as a weapon:

Another strip & repaint, this champion – Cdr (demoted) ‘Avele Swifteye’ from back in 2016. This guy gets orange pads to link back to the Fire Dragons – I thought the armour and the mask details had vague dragon vibes as well, so I’m happy with this:

Finally, we have a heavy weapon platform and crew – I think the weapon & grav platform are from around1990, but the crew are a little older, (slight hand swap conversion on the dude with the hairdo). I’ve used a very darker purple here, tying these two back to the Dark Reaper shrine:

And here they all are as a group:

I hope you’re enjoying these updates and the direction of this project – more to follow!

Greetings Terrans, I had a bit of a spurt of enthusiasm since my last post, and actually managed to get the last minis painted up for my OldHammer iteration of Scynir’s warband. Back when I first rolled up the warband in 2022, it was mostly Beastmen and a few humans, but I also allowed myself extra rolls following various games I played with the plastic incarnation. As a result, I got some pretty interesting followers to add, including the Chaos Dwarfs I transitioned to lead a few weeks ago. Here are the OldHammer iterations of some of the more weird and wonderful warband members, starting with these feathered beauties:

These Harpies are from Foundry, and are really nice models and great fun to paint – not sure why one random has human lady legs, but hey, it’s all good. I used the hair and wings to display the warband colours of orange and blue, and I thought this was effective enough to not need extra blue from warpaint. I’m really pleased with how they turned out!

Next up is a trio of Skaven:

These guys are also from Foundry, but are much less fun to paint than the Harpies… I think the sculpts are a bit ropey, no lovely long ratty tails and they look a bit well-fed to me – I prefer my rat-men to be more gaunt and feral looking! But still, these ratbags do add some charm… and some range!

Finally, we have a big ol’ Minotaur, and what better job for such a big beefy boy than being a big beefy flag waverer!

Again, this one is another Foundry model, and he really is very nicely posed for some top-drawer flag wavery. I removed his right hand weapon & sculpted in the banner pole over some wire, while the finial was made from the Horror that donated its arms to Scynir. The main body was painted up as per the earlier Beastmen, including sexy warpaint to bring in some Tzeentchian blue. I really enjoyed painting the banner itself, but with hindsight, I wish I hadn’t put a hole in it!

And that’s it – warband complete for now. This group will form the pool of minis that I use to pick out my 600 point warband for the event in November – looking forward to it immensely!

Next on the painting table – Eldar…

Greetings Terrans, last week I mentioned a project to create a 600 point WFB 3rd ed warband for an OldHammer event in November – a Norsca adventure as rival warbands compete to push their claim for the recently vacated crown of the Kingdom of Arsenduvnaewar. I decided to use this as an opportunity to do something that I have been planning for a while – paint up a lead version of my Tzeench Realm of Chaos warband, with Scynir at the head. The reason for me doing this is that even though I really like the warband as is, I’m much more likely to play an OldHammer game these days, and doing so with modern plastics just doesn’t sit right with me. Stylistically, the warband is going to look and feel very different – lacking the technical excellence of modern GW minis, but hopefully full of 80’s/90’s RoC charm. Most of the minis will be from Foundry, but with a bit of GW and others sprinkled in there for good measure.

So, every good warband should start with the leader, and in this case, I already had my leader defined – a Human champion with the Gift of Magic and Overgrown Hands. I also had the colour scheme worked out, thanks to my original version of Scynir, so really it was just a case of sourcing bits & making it happen! I used an old lead elf mage for the body, while the arms were donated from a Horror – pretty much how I approached the plastic version! The long hair of the elf hides any telltale elven ears, while the body is androgynous enough to work as a female human… I also added a small Familiar to balance out the base a bit, and this is what I ended up with:

Painting was pretty straight forward. I went with pink/yellow for the mutated hands rather than the blue/green of the original, but otherwise I used broadly the same orange/blue scheme as the original, (the blue came out a bit darker, but it’s close enough). Here they are together:

So that’s it for now folks, more to come as I start adding followers.
