Greeting Terrans, how goes it? So I have a small interlude for you today – an item that I am submitting to Ann’s challenge for this month to ‘Paint the crap you already own!’
I’ve gone one further, and painted something that I have had based and primed for an embarrassingly long time. You see, I originally intended to complete D’onne in the summer of 2018, but this passed me by, so I aimed for Fembruary 2019… and again in 2020… but each time I looked at the mini, she just scared the hell out of me with the level of detail! Finally I reached the point where I could no longer stand her glaring at me from my project box – her every line mocking my lack of painterly manliness… I finally put my big boy pants on, and put paint to mini:
As with my version of Kal Jeriko back in July 2018, I based my paint job on the cover art from a Necromunda book – this time it’s ‘Survival Instinct’, with cover art provided by Clint Langley:
I must admit, the colour choices on the cover art aren’t what I would’ve picked for a 28mm model – that hot pink looks great on the cover of a book for example, but is fiddly and subdued on a mini. Also, painting fishnets and a basque at this scale is exactly as difficult as it sounds! That said, there is a certain satisfaction to being as faithful as possible to an existing piece of art, and I am really pleased with the outcome.
Here’s a few more angles of the 12th daughter of Sylvanus Ulanti – note the attempted tattoo on the left cheek:
Also, she forms a very nice diptych with Kal:
Or triptych with Scabs:
So that’s all for now – back to the ‘planned’ stuff over the weekend 😊
She’s looking good mate – despite the tricky colours you’ve made her look very Necro!
Cheers dude, she’ll do, though seeing the pics on a big screen make me regret trying to actually paint fishnets! :-)
Even our best work looks a little dodgy when blown up to 6x or 10x or 20x. How it looks in hand is the most important thing!
True 😊
Absolutely nailed it as always mate! Excellent choice of reference material too.
Cheers dude – she was tricky, but good to get her painted & done :-)
Very nice indeed! :-) If there was a Paint-A-Big-Hair-Model challenge, she’d be a prime contender! Brilliant!
Yeah… she’s certainly very ‘of her time’ 😂
Cheers mate!
lovely, I painted one of these the other year, fine miniature and a pleasure to paint.
Thanks mate, she was good fun once I got started 😊
Nice work and don’t worry, we all have those models!
Cheers mate, good to hear it 😁👍
She’s a beaut mate. What a head of hair. I like the face tatt and I’m glad you put your big boy pants on and got her done and dusted. Great job.
Cheers dude, just good to get her done tbh! 🤘
Love the hair, makes me think of no girl I ever dated, but maybe IRO did? Great work!
Yeah, the hair is hilarious really 😂
Glad you like her mate 👍
Yeah, that really is some hair. The painting has an “angry” style that works well, I think, with the miniature. If you couldn’t get her done for Alex’s Fembruary, I’m glad you were able to complete a miniature that you’ve had kicking around for so long for Paint Your Crap April. :)
And by “Alex’s Fembruary,” I mean “your Fembruary.” I really got to start proofreading my replies until they make it so you can edit or at least delete them!
😂
Cheers Ann, better late than never, and happy to represent in PYCA! 😎👍
Hehe, always room for murderously colorful punk rocker ladies with dangerous firearms and even more dangerous hair!
That is great- really like her.
Cheers,
Pete
Thanks Pete 😊
I do love figures with a lot of detail to pick out and one of the reasons why is when they are done as well as this one they look very, very cool. I reckon you need to buy another pair of big boy pants and crack on with some more like her. 😉
Cheers mate, I’m glad you like her, and I agree… Question is, do big boy pants count as ‘essential goods’! 😂
Only when the alternative is to walk around naked! 🤣🤣
Wow, mate – recreating that (iconic) artwork on a 28mm miniature is no easy task but you’ve pulled it off – fantastic stuff. I do wish they’d redo Mad Donna for the new Necromunda (apparently she’s on the list for the designers to tackle as some point but so are a lot of things – in fairness I think we all know how that feels). Loved the book as well, one of the things that really got me into Necromunda to begin with.
Cheers dude, she would’ve been much easier to paint in a dozen different ways, but I’m glad I stuck to my guns ;-)
Would be great to see an up to date version, (though not too difficult to bash a decent version out of Escher kits I imagine)
Great job, kudos for taking on this iconic sculpt.
Thanks dude, glad to tick her off the list :-)
I hadn’t seen this mini for a while, I like what you did here, it’s a nice rendition of the art, which is kind of tricky! Congrats!
Cheers dude – I’m sure I could’ve painted her better if I didn’t follow the artwork, but I’m glad I did 😊
Nice! A fitting paintjob to adorn a classic sculpt.
Thanks dude 😊
Say, I’m curious, is “diptych” and “triptych” have a slang meaning? I’ve never seen either of these words before so I looked them up and was left still rather wanting. :)
Hi Ann, no, I don’t think they aren’t slang terms – I believe that they are used in mainly art circles for two or three objects that are intended to go together – I’ve heard it mostly used in relation to paintings, but can be applied to sculptures an such. Triptych is for paintings what Trilogy is for books.
