Greetings Terrans, how goes it? Happily, my brush with Covid is progressing nicely – my case was very mild, (which I am attributing to being vaccinated), and my self-quarantine finishes on midnight Saturday. Self-isolating in your own home is a weird and rather sad affair, and I am looking forward to hugging my wife and kids on Sunday morning! That said, being stuck in one room has given me plenty of opportunity to paint, so I really cracked on this week and painted the bony side of the box!

First up, Watch Captain Halgrim:

I had great fun with this guy – as with the Zombies I shared last week, I spent way more effort on this than I usually would for a skeleton, but the mini really deserved the extra care. I wanted the armour to look really old and corroded, but with hints of gold here and there to hint at ancient finery. I followed the same thought process on the hip plate, (the Tasset?), and added some tiny cheques to give a little more detail.

Next up, the skellies, in groups of five:

I followed the same approach as I did for Halgrim, with the only notable addition being the banner. I thought about trying for some sort of heraldry for Ulfenkarn, but settled for a tried and tested flaming skull approach instead.

Greetings Terrans, I hope this post finds you all fit and well… Sadly, not the case for me – I’ve just pulled a +ve Covid test, despite being pretty damn sensible and being double-jabbed. I’m frustrated right now – not feeling too grotty but it’s a pain in the arse… Still, I suppose it gets it all out of the way before crimbo.

Anyway, enough of that – let’s get some minis on the scene! Last time we met Gorslav the Gravekeeper, and I promised some Zees for this macabre chap to hang with… strap in for some Zombie Spam!

These Zees are all quite clever little models – there are really two sets of five figures, but each but comes in two parts & can be built two ways… As such, you get 10 unique models, but they are unavoidably samey… Here they are in pairs (per the top bit):

Most of them only look interesting from one side, but that last pair is worth a reverse shot:

I put in more effort on these than I typically do for Zombies – not that I love the models, but I felt they kinda deserve a bit more than just the bare minimum effort, just by virtue of being part of such a nice set. I’m not a fan of the hunched over pose, or of all the guff they are carrying around on their backs… I get the whole ‘stake dem restless dead down boi!’ thing, but it makes the models fussy and awkward in my opinion. I would’ve preferred it if the set included the latest Zombie kit, but hey ho, I’ll live with it. In terms of painting, there really isn’t much to say that I haven’t shared before, so I won’t repeat myself.

I apologise in advance, but this is another very quick post… time is beyond scarce at the moment, so painting has slowed to a crawl, and blogging is waaaay down the priorities list. Still, I hope you like this one today – I’m rather pleased to introduce you to ‘Gorslav the Gravekeeper’:

This, for me, is one of the stand-out models from the set, and I knew I wanted to really push the horror theme with this guy. The pale necrotised flesh is a nod to that, as is all the gore & body-horror stuff. I mean, look at the face – absolutely terrifying:

Not much to say about the painting really – I’ve pretty much got my approach nailed now, using Contrasts as a quick & easy basecoat, shading & highlighting back and forth, adding gunk and corrosion, and generally fiddling around the edges until I’m happy. It’s hard to explain really – very unstructured, but really relaxing & good fun.
