Happy Monday chaps, another quick post from me this morning – I got a few more civilians completed and ready to share with you. Firstly, we have my OSL experiment – he got tweaked slightly and had his base finished off, but otherwise the same details as last week.

Secondly, we have another Colony87 icon bearer – I went ahead and did a bit of converting on this model, seeing as he was a duplicate. His staff head is from the Scions kit, and the head was replaced with the top dome of an AdMech Ruststalker. I like how it turned out – there’s quite a cool, generic sci-fi vibe going on here… a little bit R2D2, a little bit Dalek… strangely, also reminds me of Princes Leia when she’s disguised as the bounty hunter in Jaba’s palace… maybe that’s just me, but anyway, she’s is now a she in my mind :-)

Finally, we have the last Colony87 miniature from the set. I reverted to my House Malocchio colour scheme for this guy, and, as with all the range so far, he was a joy to paint. I started to think of him as an apothecary of some sort some way through the painting, so he’s now serving as the family doctor. Here’s some pics:

So, that’s it for now chaps, I have a few more civvies on the paint station, and then I’ll be moving on to something else… not sure what yet!

Trying out ‘Object Source Lighting’…

Hi Folks, very quick post and a photo dump today – slightly unplanned, but I’m a bit excited. I picked up this guy – one of the lovely warrior acolytes from the 2000’s, and I admit that he’s been in the pile for well over a year because of that stonking great big fiery torch… Something that integral to the model needs to be accounted for in the paint job, and that means object source lighting (OSL)… I’m happy to admit that I have been too scared to take it on! Well, last night I put my big boy pants on and decided to get stuck in.

The mini was already painted, (and in a way that I was very happy with I might add), and so I got onto the interwebz and checked out a few tutorials before spending several engrossing hours trying to reproduce some of the amazing examples that I have seen over the years. It seemed very unnatural to be painting over something that I was already happy with – the prospect of messing it up and having to strip it and start again was not a pleasant thought, but hey, taking risks is how we develop as painters, right?!? Anyway, I think it turned out ok – not perfect, (photo zoom has shown a few bits that I want to go back to), but I think he’s pretty damn good for my first attempt… I’m not embarrassed to present it here for your critique :-)

A bit of fun…

Hi all, I have a little bit of daftness for you today – a small experiment if you will. I have been unlucky enough to be a bit ill this week, but it was the best kind of illness – the kind that keeps you off work but doesn’t stop you painting! I decided to experiment with a few minis that are not 40k/RT, or even sci-fi, and attempt to make them usable as RT civvies. Firstly, I quickly converted and painted up these two characters – anchor woman ‘Rhonda Burgundy’ and her trusty cameraman, bringing you all the latest news and traffic from the hive cities of Spero Secundus. Rhonda really likes to stand out from the crowd with her outrageous outfits, and is a big hit on the upper-Spire vid feeds – channel 80. Some die-hard brat-fans have adopted her style, and refer to it as ‘80’s fashion’ after the channel. The minis are from Moonraker’s ‘suits and street people’ range – they got a bit of light 40k-ification to help them to fit the setting a little better, and then a quick brush-job to get them on the table. It’s all very tongue-in-cheek and a bit of fun :-)

Next up we have Dr. ‘Hraxi Jonas’ (centre), the famous xeno-archaeologist and galactic adventurer. A little known fact about Jonas is his hatred of a nut based delicacy on his homeworld of Hrax, called ‘Nutzi’… Hraxi Jonas is accompanied by his trusted assistants ‘Knuckles’ (left), and Samwise Short-Round (right). Knuckles isn’t the sharpest hyper-scalpel in the box, but he’s loyal, and as strong as a Mukaali, (which comes in handy if ‘The Doc’ needs some heads banged together). Short-Round is a sneaky little bugger, adept at getting into places where he shouldn’t be – usually with a view to relieving people of their property. Short-Round is also bizarrely obsessed when it comes to academic achievement and status… He insists that strangers address the Doctor by his professional title, and has been known to punch them in the unmentionables if they don’t!

Hraxi Jonas is the Archaeologist from the old Talisman Timescape range – he’s a stunning piece, and one that I didn’t want to mess with at all… why would you, right? Short-Round is fantasy Halfling ‘Willy’ from WD 96 (£2.50 for 7!!!)… Short-Round got a mild bit of conversion, but nothing heavy. Knuckles is another mini from Moonraker’s ‘suits and street people’ range, no conversion work here, just a quick and easy paint job.

So there we go, a little dip into the slightly daft. One last picture of Rhonda interviewing Hraxi Jonas:

image

Rhonda: “So, ‘Hraxi  Jonas’, what can you tell channel 80 News about the alien artifact that you’ve discovered?”

Short-Round: “You call him Doctor Jonas, lady!”

Hraxi Jonas: (mutters) “Nutzies… I hate Nutzies…”
