Hello chaps, just a quick post from me, as I am a happy chap today – I managed to get back on to figures following my recent exertions on various items of scenery! I have a selection of minis set aside to act as a Planetary Defence/local constabulary/Imperial Guard squad. They are quite an eclectic bunch that cover a range of collections, including Mercs, Adventurers, Paranoia and Chainsaw Warrior, so I need to make sure I tie them together with a strong colour scheme. With that in mind, I quickly painted up a test piece yesterday and posted it on the OldHammer Facebook group for feedback. Happily, the feedback was positive, so this is the scheme I will be taking forward:
The mini is ‘Spaced-dout Sam’ from the ’87 RT Flyer – I think the sculptor was Naismith but might have been the Perry Twins, (please comment below if you know for sure!). This dude also appeared as ‘Imperial Heavy Infantry’ and ‘Imp Guard w. Autogun’, so he’s quite a flexible chap. He was a joy to paint – a nice clean sculpt with loads of surface area for RT-esque detailing… Lovely.
I’m going to crack on with the rest of his team over the next couple of weeks before I take on something a little bit special… more on that later in the month ;-)
Looking good (and extremely old school – in a good way of course). How did you do the skull on his chest? Is it just freehand (in which case excellent work) or is there some clever trick to it? It almost looks like its been stamped on (i.e. with a stamp not with your foot – can’t think of a better way to phrase that but hopefully I’m making sense…)
Thanks dude :-) Yes, the skull is freehand, but for stuff like this I kind of ‘stipple’ the paint on rather than use a smooth brush stroke… I then repeat with a few colours (I think ushabti bone and skull white for this?) Then I stipple on a brown wash until it looks ‘right’… I do the same for the cheques too – it’s basically a load of stippling! An extreme zoom should show how I do it ;-)
Interesting technique! Gives me some ideas…
Cracking paint scheme really, I’m biased towards those colours but even without that the compistion is just spot-on and balanced. all thumbs up.
Hey JB, is that a French thing mate? ;-) Thanks though dude, that is high praise coming from such a master of composition and balance. Much appreciated.
Lol, I don’t think the bias comes from that but who knows ? I just happend to kove putting blues and reds on most my models ^^
These guys are pretty tricky to come up with a colour scheme for. He looks fittingly gritty, well done :)
Thanks mate, muchly appreciated :-)
Very nice – looking forward to more!
Thanks mate – and more there shall be!
Wow, I’ve seen this mini lots of times (I even believe I have it along with some others waiting for the Muse to visit me), but I cannot recall such an outstanding work on it! I do love your work!
Thanks Suber, that is really very kind, and the feeling is absolutely mutual :-)
He looks great. The grungy look really suits him and the old-RT feel.
Thanks mate, much appreciated… and the grungy look is in no way intended to distract from my messy style of course ;-)
