Realm of Warcry; Chapter 1, part 7

Greetings Terrans, how goes it? I’m still playing catch-up on the painting that has been going on in the background, so here’s another photo dump… Strap in :-)

I mentioned in the last post that I had managed to squeeze in a couple of games of Warcry around April time, and so had a couple of rolls on the followers table. One of those produced the Skaven I shared in part 6, but the second roll actually turned into 2 rolls (legit – one of the results is ‘roll twice on the followers table’!), and I managed another pair of Beastmen and 4 Harpies…

The Beastmen were easy enough – I have plenty of Tzaangors kicking around so I used a pair of them, though annoyingly, I rolled generic Beastmen rather than power-specific ones… I could’ve ‘cheated’, but you know how precious Tzeentch is about his plans, so I just took the hint, looked at it as a modelling challenge and went with it. Luckily, the Tzaangors are quite amenable to a simple face swap:

.

Next, I looked at the Harpies – unfortunately, not something that exists in AoS these days! The Chaos Furies were pretty close and I could’ve just gone with them, but again, I chose to follow Tzeentch’s master plan & did some converting with some female Elf heads and Greenstuff:

.

I also had a Fomoroid Crusher that my pal got me for my birthday, so that big fella got a good painting too! It was great fun to go to town on the details with such a big model, and I’m really pleased with him:

.

Finally, and only tangentially related, I used the spare bits from the model that used to make the War Alter in part 6, and just threw them together to make some scatter terrain:

.

And I think that’s you guys all caught up on my Realm of Warcry project – just as well because I’m on the verge of starting a new warband! More to follow on that subject soon, but first, I have a few 40k bits to share next week to get you fully up to date with my painting – catch you then.

Greetings Terrans, how goes it? Well, it has been another very long gap between posts – life continues to be crazy busy & I’m finding it very difficult to get the time to fit everything in! Sorry to be so intermittent – I realised that I have been delaying a Realm-of-Warcry post because of the lack of the stories I just haven’t had time to write… I have been painting away in the background though, and in acknowledging that I’m not likely to get time for writing, I thought might as well get some photos up and at least return to some semblance of a well managed hobby blog!

So last RoW post I shared some Chaos Dwarfs that I had rolled up, but I did have a few more games way back in Spring, and had more follower rolls to model up. First roll was a trio of Skaven – I didn’t want to go buy a box specifically for this project, but luckily I had an old war-engine kit kicking around… a freebie from when the bases changed from square to round!! I took the crew from the kit & did some converting to give me a Warlock and two mooks:

.

I figured that I might as well build the war engine too, so opted for the Warp Lightning Cannon build, albeit with a slight change to how it went together:

I like my version – kinda looks like a giant rat skull to my eye!

.

Anyway, while I was building ‘big stuff’ and using up old kits that I had lying around, I also knocked up a War Alter:

.

I couldn’t resist adding the severed head of the Elf Mage from the story:

.

And I used the crew to make some non-combatant followers:

.

And I think that will do for one post! Again, sorry it has been so sporadic of late – removing the self-imposed shackles of needing to write stories should get things back to normal so I’ll be sure to get another update out soon.

BOYL ’22 – Last Stand at Glazer’s Creek

Greetings Terrans, it has been a while since I posted (again), been away on hols for a bit, plus work & study are both kicking the crap out of me at the moment… Finding the time to do anything else is just so damn difficult! That said, I did make my annual pilgrimage to Newark this past weekend – BOYL is one event I will always do my very best to attend. I has a blast this year, it was great to see so many familiar faces, plus I got to meet some awesome new people too. This year I put my Space Orks and my Praetorian Guard to good use, and I GM’d the ‘Last Stand at Glazer’s Creek’ scenario from WD222 on repeat. I managed to run the scenario three times, with a total of 11 individual games of Rogue Trader played (each run through has a variable number of assaults with each assault being a game). I didn’t get to see much else & I was bloody knackered by the end of the weekend, but it was so worth it. The results were as follows:

1st run through – James H (Orks) vs. Jesper (Praetorians), 5 games total. This was a bit of a practice run, refining rules & adjusting things for balance. Result was a narrow Orky win.

2nd -Paul D (Orks) vs. ‘other Paul’ (Praetorians), 3 games in total. Crushing Ork win – as an inexperienced Guard player, ‘other Paul’ was overwhelmed in the last round & couldn’t hold the farm.

3rd – Chris W (Orks) vs. ‘other Chris’ and Dan (Praetorians), 3 games in total. Narrow Praetorian win – mainly de to some masterful play from ‘other Chris’ in the final assault, (plus a little bit of luck with an out-of-control Ork Dreadnought torching a mob of Boyz!).

There were far too many twists and turns to list here, but suffice it to say that everyone got into the spirit, and this was a great narrative gaming experience. One highlight was having none other than Jervis Johnson (the gaming legend who wrote the scenario back in the day) stop by & chat a bit about the scenario! I was a bit star struck & didn’t dare ask for a photo, but he was a genuinely lovely guy who was so generous with his very limited time there. He probably doesn’t realise it but he made my bloody day 😊

Here are some pics to hopefully give you a flavour of the game:

The defending force – elements of the Dauntless 215th plus auxiliaries

.

Ready for the 1st assault of the weekend

.

Savage Orks closing quickly!

.

Rogue Trader Arturo Lamina proves his skill in combat

.

As does Captain Caine

.

I think this is the start of the final assault of game 3 – look at all those Orks! Faasends of ’em!

.

This mob of Orks were unimpressed with the imperial mortar fire!

.

Rogue Trader Lamina at it again

.

And Capt. Caine doing the same, despite sustaining grievous wounds to overwatch

.

A heroic (and suicidal) dash over the barricade to deliver a devastating blast of flamer fire

.

The Orks finally break, with just 5 humans left to defend Glazer’s Creek… Close!

.

.

Huge thanks to Jesper & James, Paul & Paul, and Chris, Dan & Chris for being such excellent players – you all made it a great experience with tons of laughs, tension, excitement, and occasional flashes of tactical genius! I hope you lads all enjoyed it as much as I did.
