Hello chaps, another quick post on my little undead side project… this time we’re on to the zombies!! To recap, the range is (mostly) non-human undead – this post covers ‘the baddy’ races of Orc, Gobbo, Rat Man and Lizard Man. As before, they were painted quickly using mostly ink washes, with just a little bit of technical paint for some effects.

First up we have ‘Orc Zombie’ by Mate Lavotha. Again, as with the skeleton, he’s a real bruiser – this time boasting a massively muscled physique. It isn’t massively obvious that he’s a zombie really, other than the classic zombie pose… not hugely convinced by this guy:

Next up we have the ‘Lizardman Zombie’ by Jason Weibe. Another substantial piece, and again, one of the stand-out minis for me. I like the pose and the detail – you can see that this guy took some killing!:

image

Thirdly we have the ‘Goblin Zombie’ by Leandro Ventic. He’s a bit light on detail and the head is a bit clown-like, but still a nice little character who was good fun and quick to paint:

image

Finally we have the ‘Ratman Zombie’ by Behrle Hubbuch. What a creepy little critter! (the mini, not the sculptor). On the one hand, there isn’t much to this mini at all, but the surface detail is actually quite lovely, and this really helps to make it look like a mangy, rotten little rat. I actually feel a bit sorry for the little guy – I bet he had a really shitty life, and undeath just continues to shit on him… poor rat:

image

And here we have the double-set of four:

I just have six more minis to go to complete this project – three sets of two. It’ll be at least a week today before I can get them finished though, I have no hobby time this week. I’ll be really glad to get them out of the way tbh, and get back to something for the grim darkness of the far future. I have a few ideas bubbling away, not to mention some cracking minis from the Colony 87 KS! Onwards and upwards! :-)

Hello folks, quick Friday post for you – I finished up the second half of the skellies from the Dungeon Monster Kickstarter from Johnny Lauck. Same as last post, they are all done with washes & drybrushing – almost speedpainted.

First up we have ‘Orc Skeleton’ by Mate Lavotha. He’s a real bruiser, (the mini, not the sculptor), and I quite like him:

image

Next up we have the ‘Lizardman Skeleton’ by Jason Weibe. Quite a substantial piece, and one of the stand-out minis from the set for me:

image

Thirdly we have the ‘Halfling Skeleton’ by Brian Cooke. Short, no shoes… yep, it’s a Halfling! Not much else to say here – I think I would’ve liked to see this guy with a bow:

image

Finally we have the ‘Ratman Skeleton’ by Behrle Hubbuch. An odd little sculpt, but strangely appealing – not entirely sure what he/she/it is wearing though:

image

And here we have the full double set of eight!

image

On a slight side note, I got my new-old-new White Dwarf through the post this week. I won’t waste your time by going over the contents – it’s all over the internet and I’m sure you’re up to speed on that. Suffice to say that, in my humble opinion, it is a pretty darn good magazine and is worth picking up. It comes with a free variant Slaughter Priest mini, so I may well use mine to do a pit-slave pal for by other SP conversion… If I make a start then I’ll do some WIP shots for you in my next post, otherwise I’ll be cracking on with the other half of my undead adventures – the same races in zombie form!!! See you from the crypt!

Frostgrave

Hello folks, I have a little post to share with you today – I haven’t had too much hobby time lately what with one thing or another, but I did manage to make a start on the recent Dungeon Monster Kickstarter from Johnny Lauck. The KS was to produce a range of undead (both skellibobs & zombies) from different fantasy races – each race covered by a different sculptor. I got a double batch of each, very much with Frostgrave in mind, and got cracking with my first eight. Paint-wise, they are all mostly painted with various washes, followed by drybrushing – nothing fancy or demanding here :-)

First up we have ‘Dead Sonja’ by Faron Betchley. She’s a lovely little sculpt, one of the best of the bunch, and I could have gone in to much more detail here if I wasn’t pushed for time:

image

Next up we have the ‘Ranger Skeleton’ by Nadrav Igra. Again, this is one of the best of the bunch, with a nice pose & detail. I’m reading this as an Elf:

image

Thirdly we have the ‘Goblin Skeleton’ by Leandro Ventic. This is probably one of the more bizarre sculpts in the set – light on detail, and why would a skeleton have ears and a nose?? Still, he’s good fun and quick to paint:

image

Finally we have the ‘Dwarf Skeleton’ by Bob Olley. This is classic Bob – big head, and loads of detail should you want to spend the time on it. This guy also comes up a bit big within the context of the group, if you care about such things:

image

And here we have the four plus their dupes – quite the group I hope you will agree!

image

Next time I’ll share the other half of the Skeletons with you – a lot of the ink washing is already done on them in a batch-paint stylee, so hopefully not too long to wait. Catch you from the graveside!

Hello chaps, super quick update from me today – after my last game of Frostgrave I managed to roll up a ‘magic crossbow’, but didn’t have a model to represent it! I had a quick rummage in the leadpile and saw some possibilities with an old Citadel chaos thug, (the one with a brace of pistols), so I set about him with snips, file and filler. Playing to the techno side, I tried to suggest that the crossbow was some kind of compressed air powered device in order to set it apart as a ‘magic’ item. I got him finished earlier today, just in time for a cheeky little game this evening, so I thought I’d get a quick post in to show him off. I chose to paint his legs up as if he had tights on rather than have him bare legged… I couldn’t resist painting his pants up in leopard skin, (it’s sad, I know… but I couldn’t resist!). A few bits and bobs were used to make up the crossbow, and his right arm was transplanted from an earlier chop job on a Marauder thug… I wanted to include arrows somewhere, but I didn’t think about the discrepancy of having flights on the arrows in hand, but none on the crossbow bolt until painting… hopefully no-one will notice… You didn’t notice, did you? :-/   The rest of the painting was as per the rest of the warband, including his warpaint… Anyhow, here he is:

This will be my last post for a while, (sorry impRebelOrk!), I’m away on a camping trip with the kids next week so I’ll be off-grid for a while. I’ll catch you homosapians on the flip side!

Hello chaps, quick post from me today… So, I had my first ever game of Frostgrave on Monday night, and what a laugh! I didn’t do much in the way of recording a blow-for-blow account, (too busy figuring out how to play!), but I can tell you that it is good fun. I think both Ross and I were quite conservative throughout – Ross lost 2 chaps while my Warhound bought the farm, and we ended up with a 3-3 draw on the loot front. Our wizards/apprentices never even set eyes on each other, so we were being over-cautious I think :-)   Highlights were Ross ‘Leaping’ a thug up to claim treasure from a very high ledge, only for me to ‘Crumble’ said ledge out from under him, (and then the falling, the screaming and the dying), and Ross’ wizard killing my Warhound with one hefty whack of his staff.

Objectively, it seems rather easy to play for a draw in a standard game, and that was a little disappointing… We realised that we were on for a draw pretty early on, so we pretty much went for damage limitation after that. I think we’ll be going for some scenarios next time to make it more interesting. The game mechanic itself is pretty slick, and the d20 roll can really chuck out some crazy results. Magic, and the use of it is key to the game (duh!), so choose your spells wisely, and don’t be afraid to get stuck in! We only managed one mook-fight, and apparently archers are pretty ineffective…

One big surprise was how much fun we had with all the ‘out-of-game’ stuff, (we decided to start a campaign, so we did all the injury rolls, treasure rolls, etc. right after the game). All in all, despite the ‘pick up and play’ billing, it is quite a rich game with plenty to think about on the strategy side and a fairly simple mechanic that is easy to get you’re your head around and that doesn’t get in the way of play. My warband is already expanding, because I rolled up a ‘magic crossbow’ as one of my treasure items, so (of course) I needed a crossbow dude… with crossbow that looked like it might be +2 better than a regular crossbow… in a techno-barbarian style…  I had a quick rummage in the lead-pile for a mini that fit the feel of the warband last night, and then got busy with the cutting, the gluing and the sculpting:

Compressed air-powered crossbow with sniper scope? Yeah, that’s got to be +2 better than a regular crossbow, right? Now, to get him painted for the weekend! :-D

Happy Monday chaps, I’m happy to report that I have a) completed the thugs & warhound that I needed to finish up my starting Frostgrave/RT warband, and b) I’m due to take them out for spin tonight in my first (rescheduled) game of Frostgrave. Double-yey! So without further ado, here are the thugs & hound:

image

I’m pretty happy with this group – the guy on the left had his left arm swapped out after some feedback from Wudugast when I posted up the WIPs – a significant improvement I feel (thanks mate!). Middle guy is a case of making the best of things really! He turned out ok I think, but he’s a real odd-ball sculpt, and I really wish I had done something about his left arm – that’s three ‘pointers’ in ten figures, which is an excessive level of pointy-fingeritis in my opinion… Ho-hum, he’s just a thug so I should be able to swap him out early in any campaign. The guy on the right is another one where I wish I had done something different with the left arm, but other than that I think he’s pretty solid. I’m pretty chuffed with the warhound – he’s also a Marauder piece, but I went with one of the Dark Elf hounds rather than the more bizarre but obvious chaos warhound. I tried to paint an exotic but believable coat on this little fella – I think it worked out? Anyhow, here’s a shot of the whole starting warband:

image

As a side note, I also cranked out another building over the weekend – an MDF hab-unit from ‘Charlie Foxtrot Models’. It needs two soft-drink cans to complete the curved side sections, and it’s quite a big item! I added a few bits here and there, most notably rungs up the sides to encourage roof access. Here are a few pics of the warband posing on and around it :-)

So, that’s all for now folks – I suspect that my next post will be a skirmish report from tonight’s Frostgrave intro!
