Hello folks – just like Arnie, I’m back! Yey!! Man… I can’t believe it has been almost 2 months since I posted my completed Techno-Barbarian village – our house has been upside down in all that time, making painting, modelling etc. practically impossible. I have really missed painting and blogging in that time, though luckily, I have been able to closely follow a number of excellent blogs out in the Noosphere, (yes… you know who you are), and so I have been getting my kicks second hand. I have also managed to get in a fair few games of Frostgrave these last months, (my techno-barbarian warband is now up to level 16!), but nothing to really satisfy my creative urges.
Anyhow, I am really pleased to report that a) the house is finished, and we have a cracking new kitchen & downstairs layout to enjoy, and b) I have picked up the brushes again. You know, it’s weird, but I am feeling incredibly rusty on the painting front, and strangely timid about ‘getting back into it’. I don’t know if anyone else has had a similar situation, but it definitely feels a bit uncomfortable… Ah well, got to start somewhere, right?
So… I’ve been pondering what to work on for my return, and (as you can imagine) I have a number of options. For starters, I have the Silver Tower game to sort out, plus several lovely Kickstarters that shipped recently. Also, I want to expand on the techno-barbarians, I have some Frostgrave creatures to sort out, and I have a number of small Confrontation collections to tackle as well… Such decisions! In the end, I decided to finish up my pit slave conversion, just to get my eye in, so to speak. He’s based on the AoS Slaughter Priest, and we last saw him in this state:
Now he’s finished, and he looks more like this:
And a little diorama to show just how big this guy is!
I worked really hard on getting a nicely weathered look to the armour, and even harder on the blending & washing on the flesh… it did not feel like a very graceful or natural process at first, in fact, I found it to be quite mechanical and robotic at times… kind of ‘painting by numbers’ so to speak. Happily, the process has blown out a few cobwebs for me, and I’m pretty happy with how he turned out in the end. So what next? I have a few Oldhammerish odds and sods lying around in their undercoats, so I’m going to work through them just to sharpen up my brushwork a little bit more… I’m not sure after that, but the main thing is that normal service is resumed at Leadballoony – thank you all for your patience, it’s good to be back.
MaaaaaaaaaaaaaTee!!!! What a come back!! Firstly, congrats on the renovations man. I’ve done quite a bit of that sort of thing and I know how much of an upheaval it can be. I’m glad you’re happy with the end result. Secondly, I was nervous to start my blog so I can relate in that regard. Thirdly… Holy shit dude what a fantastic model and paint job. The tone on the flesh is spot on. The armour looks fantastic and that face is creepy as hell. Excellent EXCELLENT work!!!! Welcome back brother.
Thanks dude – good to be back, good to be painting, and very good to have a kitchen again!!! Glad you like him mate :-)
When’s the next one then? Haha
:-P
He is so cool Alex! Really nice work, gritty enough and I really like that hazard marking on his leg.
Thanks dude – yeah, I like the legs too… the armour was all very bright and clean at the start! :-)
Great to see you back, and even better to see you return by painting that techno-barbarian! The copper armor looks absolutely fantastic, and his flesh is exactly what I would imagine. Great job!
Thanks mate – good to be back & glad you like him :-)
He’s proper cool and it’s great to have you back on tracks !
Thanks mate – he’s a beast isn’t he? Good to be back :-)
Welcome back and good work :)
Thanks Warbs, back in the saddle :-)
Guess who’s back?
Backstreet’s back, alright!
Muhahaha
Great to see you back again. Bloody awesome work on the Slaughterpriest. Excellent conversion of an excellent mini. I’ve been eyeing it since it dropped. Might have to pick it up now.
Ahh shit – forgot about those nobbers 😂
Thanks mate, good to be back (alright!) & glad you like the SP conversion… he’s bloody massive!
How big is he compared to the ubiquitous Space Marine?
Good question! Probably a good fit for a big truescale Marine… I’ll have to dig out my BadWolves and do a comparison :-)
He returns in style! Great work on the pit-slave mate, he’s certainly everything I hoped he would be.
Cheers mate – he’s quite the specimen isn’t he?
Loving the gritty paintjob! And the conversion is perfect. The stumpy drill-arm is a detail that stands out for me, makes for a unique silhouette.
Also: damn! He really is made in a completely different scale than the rest!
Thanks mate – yeah, I like the asymmetry of this guy too, though I actually intended the left arm to be the ‘male’ part of a socket arrangement for another tool arm, but hey-ho ;-)
Oh, and you’re right, he perfectly illustrates the scale-creep of AoS… he’s flippin’ massive!
Glad you like him mate :-)
oyeah, thats smarter than just a drill:)
Very nice
he could have a servitor-lowlife-squire carying a selection of add-on tools/arms.
Haha – I was thinking of actually making some that fit on to the stump!
Well, you certainly came back in style! What a beast! Amazing job. Cool having you around again :)
Hey, thanks Suber – glad you like him & good to be back mate :-)
So hapy to see you returning to you this, as I missed the opportunity to tell you how much I love the conversion the last time around ;) Did you realise that one of the main reasons why I’ve used my own Slaughterpriest for a plastic Angron conversion was because I felt I couldn’t possibly improve on the augmented gladiator look after seeing your model? :)
The paintjob is also excellent, especially the combination of the very effective skin tones and all of the oily, rusty metal!
If I can make one small suggestion, I think I’d go back and make sure the teeth were painted a bit more exactly, as that is the one area that sems to be letting down the rest of the model a bit right now.
But anyhow, fantastic work on the big guy! :)
Hey Krauty, good to get back to it! Thanks for the feedback mate, glad you like :-) Good shout on getting him to the dentist though, I did them early on and didn’t go back to them… must’ve gone tooth-blind! ;-)
So good! Welcome back :)
Thanks Migs, good to be back dude, glad you approve :-)
Thats great work. The stump arm with the interface piece is inspired, a really good example of less being more.
Im not fussy about mild differences in scale – I think that its a pity to restrict my enjoyment based on something like that – but wow, that guy is huge. Absolutely perfectly suited to the role that you have given him, but really, wow.
Fantastic work Alex!
Thanks for the feedback dude, glad you like him :-)
I don’t think he’s out of scale myself – he is just an absolute beast of a man, and that makes good sense to me. If you’re going to vat-grow a body specifically for grafting with heavy gear, then you’re going to go large! I might do him a small buddy for working in tight spaces ;-)
I don’t think that he is out of scale either if you know what I mean. Apparently the Slaughterpriest is supposed to grow in height due to blood magic, so the model doesn’t just look like a different scale, it’s like a stretched, huge 30mm guy.
Anyway, good stuff all round.
Ahhh, because magic! ;-)
Great work on this guy – he’s come up fantastically well. A real “Mean Machine”…
:-) Thanks mate
