Hi guys, so good to be posting today. It has been ages since my last post, I’ve just been so damn busy! But hey, good news – I’ve finally finished up my heavy servitors/mummy blockers, (‘mummy blockers’ as in Egyptian undead wot do blocking rather than things wot block Mums…)
To be honest, I found the whole Mummy thing pretty tricky to reconceptualise as a 40K servitor… I mean, what is the deal with Mummies? Surely they are just wrapped-up zombies, yeah? They should be human sized, yeah? So why are they so strong compared to regular zombies?? Don’t tell me… because magic, right? Right… *sigh*
Look, I know it’s only pretending and all that, but the whole ‘Mummy problem’ gave me some headaches when planning this project. I was torn between making pimped out human-sized servitors, or going with something that reflected the Blood Bowl stat-line. In the end, I went with option two because I wanted these guys to read as being slow, strong and very well armoured. I used Stormcast Eternal legs and the torsos from the Kataphron kit to give a really chunky industrial look, and used Kataphron heads as well to tie them in with my Zombie Linemen. The arms were a bit hit and miss – I kind of tried for an asymmetrical heavy-lifting idea on their right hand side, but I’m not sure how well that came off. I also got lazy and used a servo-arm on the one guy, and the grabber from a servo-arm on the other, and wish I hadn’t. I think they look awkward and skinny, but done is done. Here they are – see what you think:
To be honest, these are my least favourite models in the project, but I’m not going to lose any sleep over it – I can always revisit this in the future after all. The important thing is that the team is now complete, and here they are – the Clockwork Orange in all their glory:
Now… time to get immersed in the Chapel >:-)
FWIW Alex I reckon that thesession two look as good if not better than the rest of the already excellent look ingredients group.
Fantastic work on a project really well done.
Ah, thanks mate, I’ll take your word for it :-) TBH, I’m just glad to have this lot done, and I’m looking forward to moving on to something very different!
It must be the frustration speaking for you but from my pov, they look just as bosss honestly, the arm difference is weird at first sight indeed but then it help differentiate both guys which is better in my view.
I’m a huge fan of the multi purpose aspect of those just like the FG band.
It’s also a very strong reminder for that underhive BB team I had in mind…
Great stuff mate.
Thnks JB, and good point mate – I did find these two frustrating, even painting them was a chore! Still, job done and on to the next project :-)
They do look a little awkward but that’s why I like them. Big, bulky, awkward bastards! Great working Alex.
Haha – yeah, that about sums them up mate! :-)
Solid looking fellows mate! I think they work really well and have the look of something you bounce off, the whole immovable object thing :)
Cheers mate – yeah, you might be able to run around them, but they don’t look like the kind of dudes that let people run through them! That said, what’s the bets that one of ’em gets KO’d in his first match ;-)
Oh you know it mate. 😃
I wouldn’t be so hard on them mate, they look good. Love how the huge hand looks like a catcher’s mitt. I’ve always found mummies don’t really fit in with the look of other undead (hence why GW split tomb kings and vampire counts I suppose) and applying an Egyptian aesthetic to 40k without ending up with something that looks like either Necrons or Thousand Sons isn’t easy so tying them in to the rest of the team rather than trying to make them too “mummyish” was a wise move IMO.
Cheers dude – that would be ‘mister punch’ you’re talking about ;-) Yeah, mummies are a bit of an odd duck really… glad I went the way I did, even if I’m not 100% happy with the outcome
Very nice; as others have said, I think the awkwardness works for them, and I would have thought you had done it on purpose if you hadn’t said otherwise. Great stuff!
Ha, I should keep my blinkin’ mouth shut! ;-)
Cheers Warbs, glad you like ’em mate
Blood Bowl mummies are always problematic visually, but by breaking away from the traditional look, there’s no problem at all in making your mummies heavy duty servitors. I think the big, bulky look was the correct decision. They actually work very well indeed – I love the asymmetry on the arms. My only comment is that the lower halves look a little lacking in bulk and industrial design – if you ever do revisit them it might be worth taking a look at something like mega-armoured ork nobs for something a little less sculptural.
Thanks mate and good call. Meganob bitz did occur to me at one stage – as did using stormhost top halves! Maybe next time :-)
‘Your least favourite’ still mean ‘f&%$ing awesome’ to the rest of us! ;)
Oh stop it Suber, you’re making me blush! (but really, thanks mate ;-))
I like these – I might steal the concept as they would make great ogyrns in a cyber milita themed 30k army :)
Thanks mate & steal away – they are certainly big enough to be Ogryns!
I can only agree with the other guys: You shouldn’t be frustrated with these, as they are fantastic! I especially like how they add to the concept of different sizes and model shapes across the team — speaking of which, the fact that these can work both as a Blood Bowl team and a Necromunda/Inquisimunda warband is rather brilliant.
As for the heavy duty tool arms not quite coming together, maybe some careful weathering might do the trick? Especially on the guy with the Kastelan hand. I think some scratches and some sponge weathering would make that huge shiny robot hand actually look as though it were actually being used to do some heavy lifting ;)
Using Stormcast Eternal legs for these guys is brilliant, though! Definitely an idea to be remembered!
Thanks mate, I appreciate that :-) Funnily enough, I was thinking about doing some weathering, but wanted them all finished first so that I could do it consistently across the team. You’ve helped me to make up my mind ;-) Cheers dude!
I like them. Can’t say that either look like mummy but they are cool. The Stormcastlegs, weird hip ring and ad mech aestetichs. All cool.
Thanks mate, glad you like ’em. You’re right, I avoided trying to represent mummies as a concept, but hopefully they do reflect the stat line & role :-)
I’ve only lately come to your blog via IRO (back-reading now) but i’ve been a long time BB fan and this team is quality. I’ve not seen anything like it and love it!
Why, thank you, and welcome aboard! :-)
