New squad

Hello chaps, I’ve finished off a handful of oldschool Guardsmen to act as a general purpose mook squad in games of Rogue Trader. ‘Spaced-dout Sam’ is joined by ‘Faststar John’ and ‘Abbadon’(?!?) from the RT7 Mercenaries range, and Troopers Vaskez (sic) and Brough from the RT05 Imperial Army range. I really like this little unit, it contains a nice selection of minis that are varied but that still look cohesive – you can see that the designers at the time were busy experimenting and figuring out how the Imperium should look. For example, it only occurred to me during painting that the old IG helmet (as worn by Brough) is very close to the MkVI Beaky helmet, (minus the beak of course). Sure, some of the sculpts are a bit dodgy – Vaskez’s face is really soft, and Abbadon is a bit of a mess too, but these Cadian ancestors certainly have charm:

Paint-wise, I followed my test piece quite closely – Blue overalls, grey armour, and a red/white cheque motif with bits of freehand as and when and a bit of weathering for good measure. They all have elements of my Rogue Trader’s heraldry on them somewhere so they can easily fit in with him, or they can work equally well as their own thing.

Anyway, that’s it for now, I hope you like these – I’ll certainly be adding to this group as time goes by, but for now I’m feeling the urge to chop some stuff up… I have an ambitious little conversion in mind… As a little teaser, I’ll ask a simple question – Who holds the true power within the Imperium?

Test piece for a new unit

Hello chaps, just a quick post from me, as I am a happy chap today – I managed to get back on to figures following my recent exertions on various items of scenery! I have a selection of minis set aside to act as a Planetary Defence/local constabulary/Imperial Guard squad. They are quite an eclectic bunch that cover a range of collections, including Mercs, Adventurers, Paranoia and Chainsaw Warrior, so I need to make sure I tie them together with a strong colour scheme. With that in mind, I quickly painted up a test piece yesterday and posted it on the OldHammer Facebook group for feedback. Happily, the feedback was positive, so this is the scheme I will be taking forward:

The mini is ‘Spaced-dout Sam’ from the ’87 RT Flyer – I think the sculptor was Naismith but might have been the Perry Twins, (please comment below if you know for sure!). This dude also appeared as ‘Imperial Heavy Infantry’ and ‘Imp Guard w. Autogun’, so he’s quite a flexible chap. He was a joy to paint – a nice clean sculpt with loads of surface area for RT-esque detailing… Lovely.

I’m going to crack on with the rest of his team over the next couple of weeks before I take on something a little bit special… more on that later in the month ;-)

Yey, I painted stuff!!

Happy New Year folks, quick post from me today – I painted some stuff!! First up, the grandmother of all Land Speeders, painted quick and dirty to use as scatter terrain. This model is an absolute pig to assemble, tedious to paint, and it weighs a ton… That said, it is 27 years old and is a bit of a classic, so I’m glad to have done one to add to the collection:

I also got my hands on three ‘Alarm Posts’ from Taban Miniatures, again, to use for scatter terrain. These were great fun to paint, (quick & dirty again), and have a load of narrative potential with the cameras, speakers, etc. I can imagine trying to silence a guard before he can make it to the post to raise the alarm, all Metal Gear Solid and ting… cool stuff :-)

I’ve also mostly painted a ‘Promethium Relay Pipe’ and a Battlefield Accessories set from GeeDub, and the pipe kit is really rather good! It goes together nicely, and makes for a very attractive and useful piece of terrain. I’ve taken my usual scruffy, rusty, shitty approach, and I just need to finish off some of the details like dials and lights, but it’s finished enough for you to get the idea:

I’ve got a load of other GeeDub buildings waiting to be put together & painted, (a ‘Merry Christmas’ present to myself), and I feel a whole lot more positive about taking them on after working on this little kit.

In other news, I played a cool little game of Rogue Trader the other night – Salvage crew vs. Beastmen! I’ll need to do a proper write-up at some point, but here are some pics to give you the idea:

So that’s it for now, – it has all been a bit ‘scenic’ so far this year, which isn’t my preferred subject, but I’m aiming to get back on to painting some actual figures next week. I have a bunch of mixed RT imperial guard dudes in their undercoats, plus some serious conversion fodder to get involved with…
